The cost to your Web business of privacy protection

A report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, in cooperation with consultants Baker & McKenzie, attempts to quantify the costs of privacy protection standards and laws that affect e-commerce Web sites.

The study interviewed 98 international business executives in September and October 2001 to reach conclusions about the practical aspects of privacy protection on the Web and the steps that businesses should or must take to act on such issues.

"Imagine browsing through a bookstore you've never visited before," says the report, by way of illustrating privacy concerns. "Now imagine that as a result the store's owner knows where you work, what other shops you've just visited, and what pages you've lingered over and will instantly recognize you the next time you visit."

The report notes that various and sometimes conflicting legal standards are arising in the United States and Europe. In the United States, personal health care information is protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), financial privacy is governed by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB), and information about children under 13 is regulated by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). And that doesn't count state legislation, such as various states' anti-spam laws.

The bulk of the report, which is free in PDF format, contains 10 recommendations for companies that collect or use any kind of personal information on the Web. The information is well worth a look.

E-BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY REVIEW: FIRST MP3 CELL PHONES

If you want to listen to your favorite tunes while out jogging or running errands, but you don't want to miss that important phone call from Mr. Big, then a cell phone that integrates an MP3 player and earphones may be the one-device-that-does-it-all for you.

That brings us to the Samsung SPHM100 Uproar, an appropriately tiny cell phone that comes with the capability to store and play back an hour of music at MP3's highest-quality compression level. You probably won't do much Web surfing on the phone's 5-line screen, but you could if you were so inclined.

The device currently has a street price about $150, and you'll need to check whether it's compatible with the cellular service plan you intend to use it with.
