AVOID THE TOP FIVE E-BUSINESS MISTAKES

Succeeding in business is difficult, and it's even more difficult on the Web if your site makes one or more of the "five most common e-business mistakes." These five principles were derived by Butler Technology Solutions, a New Jersey research group that says almost all of the problems with the Web sites it studied were the result of one or more of these basic errors.

In a nutshell, the five mistakes are:

1. Marketing fails to attract customers to the site

2. Web site not integrated with back-office systems

3. Web site is not designed to be intuitive

4. Incompatible systems and poor network design are used

5. Site is outdated, static, or unattractive

The researchers presented their findings to private clients earlier this year, and now a summary of their report is available online. It is well worth reading, especially the Recommendations section, which can be accessed via a link on the opening page. Although Butler's own site is hardly a beauty to look at and is marred with typos -- as I write this, I notice that the site spells "avoid" wrong on every page -- the insights in the report are gems that are worth pondering.

E-BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY REVIEW: CELL PHONE/PALM SYSTEMS

What did we ever do before cell phones? And handheld organizers? Now you don't have to carry two separate devices with the introduction of Kyocera's QCP6035, a true cell phone and handheld in a single unit. With its keypad in the usual position it's a phone, but flip the keypad out of the way and you find the standard Palm OS in a form factor similar to the Palm m100.

This idea was first attempted, poorly, by Qualcomm in 1999 with its pdQ Smartphone. This was a brick-like device that completely bombed because it cost $800 and wouldn't fit in a shirt pocket.

Kyocera did a lot of tweaking and came up with a better design that's smaller and 25 percent lighter. Best of all, the QCP6035 is down to about $350 with service activation and authorized rebates.
