New software spider finds 'Super affiliates' for sites

As I wrote last week, if your e-business encourages affiliates to drive traffic to your site, studies have shown that 95 percent of the resulting sales are likely to come from only 5 percent of those affiliates. These few, highly productive associates are known as "super affiliates." They are ardently sought after for their e-commerce marketing skills.

Now a new service, called the Internet Success Spider, helps you find potential super affiliates who are likely to be interested in marketing the particular offerings on your site.

The Spider ranks the strongest sites linked to any e-businesses you select. The tool was developed by Neil Shearing, the director of Scamfreezone.com, a consumer protection and home business site.

I purchased a Spider license for testing. To illustrate how it works, let's say that your site sells flower arrangements. Super affiliates of other floral sites, such as 1800flowers.com, might be amenable to sending traffic to your site.

Using search engine technology, the Spider finds all the sites that link to 1800flowers. It then ranks those sites, in turn, in descending order of the number of sites that link directly to them. With a nod to Google.com's "link popularity" concept, it's easy to see that sites linked to by the most other sites are very likely to be the super affiliates you're interested in.

Of course, you could do something like this manually by yourself. Simply go to Altavista.com and type "link:1800flowers.com" (without the quote marks). This search reveals 8,789 sites that link to the florist. You could then repeat this process for each of those sites ... but you quickly see why it's faster to have the Spider do the work for you.

The lists that the Spider produces tend to be headed by Yahoo.com and other major directories. Ignore the top few listings and scroll down to sites that are genuine marketing partners. Once you've made a list of your most likely prospects, Shearing suggests techniques that others have found successful for initiating relationships.

The service costs $79 for an unlimited period, but it requires as many as 24 hours for human approval of applications. There is a no-questions-asked, 100-percent-money-back guarantee, however.

E-BUSINESS BOOK REVIEW: CORE WEB PROGRAMMING

In January 1998, a computer scientist at Johns Hopkins University named Marty Hall published the first edition of "Core Web Programming." It immediately became successful as a thorough teaching guide to HTML 3.2, the Java Developer's Kit 1.02 and 1.1, CGI programming, and other then-current tools.

That book is almost a fossil now, so Hall (with colleague Larry Brown) has produced a completely revised paperback, laden with 1,440 pages of new technologies. The HTML material, of course, has been updated to 4.0. But the new work is also rich with JSP (JavaServer Pages), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), XML, and much more. There are plenty of examples of running code -- more than 250 working examples of Java classes, for instance. Programmers who haven't yet mastered these topics but want to will find a lot to chew on here.
